This week, I’ve started to dream of an adventure into Morocco.
Morocco is a culturally rich country where religion, language, and tradition blend seamlessly into everyday life. The dominant religion is Islam, with the vast majority of Moroccans being Sunni Muslims, and the call to prayer is heard throughout the day, reflecting the central role of faith in the community. Arabic is the official language, while French is widely spoken; Amazigh (Berber) languages are also prevalent, particularly in rural areas. Morocco’s culture is a vibrant mix of Arab, Berber, and European influences, evident in its architecture, music, festivals, and hospitality, creating a warm and diverse atmosphere that enchants visitors.
As winter creeps closer, I’ve found my mind wandering off in search of a new adventure further afield. I thought I’d share my research with you all, into some of the best areas I’ve found in Morocco for a two-wheeled experience.
Atlas Mountains
For riders looking for dramatic mountain passes and desert dunes, this Atlas Mountains Loop offers the perfect mix.
– Day 1-2: Start in Marrakech, ride to Ouarzazate via the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass, a road known for its scenic twists through the High Atlas Mountains.
– Day 3-4: Head towards the breathtaking Dades and Todra Gorges, with their towering canyon walls and winding roads.
– Day 5-6: Ride through the desert to Merzouga and experience the magic of the Sahara’s Erg Chebbi dunes.
– Day 7-8: Follow the route to Erfoud and Midelt, transitioning from desert landscapes to greener, mountainous regions.
– Day 9-10: Return to Marrakech, enjoying the mountainous terrain and sweeping views once more.
Southern Desert Adventure
For those seeking a more rugged and desert-focused journey, this Southern Desert Adventure offers a deep dive into the sands of the Sahara and the beauty of southern Morocco.
– Day 1: Begin in Marrakech and make your way south to Ouarzazate.
– Day 2: Continue along the Draa Valley to Zagora, a town on the edge of the desert, known for its palm groves and ancient kasbahs.
– Day 3-4: Journey to M’Hamid, the gateway to the Sahara, and venture into the dunes of Erg Chigaga for an unforgettable desert experience.
– Day 5-6: Return to Agdz, exploring traditional Berber villages and oases.
– Day 7-8: Head west to Taroudant, often called “Little Marrakech,” passing through the Anti-Atlas Mountains.

Imperial Cities and Rif Mountains
For riders who want to mix cultural exploration with scenic rides, the Imperial Cities and Rif Mountains route offers the chance to visit Morocco’s historic cities while enjoying the quiet beauty of the Rif Mountains.
– Day 1-2: Start in Tangier or the vibrant blue city of Chefchaouen, exploring the Rif Mountains before heading to the cultural hub of Fes.
– Day 3-4: After taking in Fes, ride to Ifrane, a town often compared to Switzerland for its alpine architecture, then continue to Azrou.
– Day 5-6: Travel towards the Middle Atlas, passing through Midelt and Errachidia before heading into desert landscapes.
– Day 7-8: Spend time in Merzouga near the Erg Chebbi dunes, enjoying desert life before heading west.
– Day 9-10: Ride back through Meknes or Tangier, exploring Morocco’s stunning countryside.
Preparing for a Moroccan Motorbike Adventure
– Best time to ride: The spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are ideal for riding, avoiding the extreme summer heat and cold winter temperatures.
– Terrain: Expect a mix of tarmac, gravel, and sand—especially in the desert. Adventure bikes are a great choice for these routes.
– Morocco Visa for Indian Travellers: To obtain the tourist visa for Morocco, each traveller will need the following ready ahead of your trip –
- Visa Application Form: Completed and signed.
- Passport: Valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry, with at least one blank page.
- Photographs: Two recent passport-size color photos.
- Flight Bookings: Proof of confirmed round-trip flights.
- Accommodation: Hotel reservations or an invitation letter if staying with friends or family.
- Financial Proof: Bank statements for the last three months showing sufficient funds.
